The iconic covers – featuring a Peacock atop a sundial – were designed by Hugh Thomson, one of the most popular Victorian illustrators, who worked on editions of all Austen’s novels. Just as Pride and Prejudice was Austen’s greatest work, this is Thomson’s. From the fetching green cloth to the lavish gilt feathers to the typography it’s perfect and unsurpassed. In addition, Thomson also provides over a hundred black and white sketches including decorated initials.
